CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - A former Cleveland Indians infielder has died in a car crash.
Major League Baseball announced Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo have passed away.
The Orange County Register is reporting the accident happened in the state of Yaracuy in Venezuela.
Valbuena played baseball with the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Angels.
He played with the Indians in Cleveland in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The infielder hit 13 homers with Cleveland.
His best year came in 2014, Valbuena had 119 hits, 16 homers and posted a batting average of .249.
“The Indians are saddened to hear of the passing of former Tribe infielder Luis Valbuena. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends,” the Indians posted on Twitter.
Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. issued the following statement earlier today:
“This is a very sad day for our sport as we mourn the deaths of Luis Valbuena and José Castillo. It is clear by all the stories today that they loved baseball and made an impact on their teammates and the Clubs they represented. On behalf of Major League Baseball, I extend my deepest condolences to their families, friends and fans, particularly those in their native Venezuela.”
